FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can reflexology be used to cure existing health conditions or to diagnose a new health condition?

No, reflexology cannot cure you of any condition you already have or any new condition. It is designed to be a complimentary therapy to work alongside modern medicine. It is a safe holistic treatment that can promote a sense of wellbeing and relaxation which is beneficial in achieving better health.

Can reflexology be used to treat all health conditions?

Reflexology is a safe complimentary treatment that can be enjoyed by most clients and is suitable for all ages. There may be limitations and variations to a treatment depending on individual requirements and expectations. I will discuss these during the initial phone consultation.

Do you need to see a health practitioner about your existing health condition before a treatment?

As with all holistic treatments you are advised to discuss any concerns you have prior to treatment with a medical healthcare professional. However, if you deem yourself to be in good health and your current condition/s are stable, then I can proceed with treatment providing you have signed the disclaimer. You will be given information during the phone consultation in order for you to make an informed decision.

Are there any conditions that cannot be treated?

I cannot support a client living with some conditions. These include the first trimester of pregnancy, thrombosis (blood clots) and whiplash if court proceedings are currently taking place. Clients living with a medical oedema (swelling) that has been diagnosed as a direct cause of heart failure, kidney failure or cancer will need to seek healthcare advice from a professional medical practitioner to deem if reflexology is safe for them to have. Please discuss with your oedema specialist before booking an appointment. Any client with a fungal or infectious foot disease will receive treatment at the discretion of the therapist and must be declared at the time of phone consultation. In all cases gloves will always be worn. Clients suffering from any infectious illness, diarrhoea or vomiting will be asked to rebook.

Can frail clients or children be treated?

Yes, the treatment is suitable for all ages. However, in some cases hand reflexology may be more comfortable and relaxing.

Why is an initial phone consultation required prior to treatment?

An initial phone consultation provides an opportunity for me to gain knowledge about your current lifestyle, health and expectations for the overall therapy. From this I can create a personalised treatment plan that can provide you with the best possible experience. It is also an opportunity for you to ask questions and for me to introduce myself prior to the treatment.

Is clothing removed during the treatment?

Only footwear including socks are removed to allow treatment, it is preferable to wear loose fitting garments to allow access to the ankles and feet. You will be asked to sit on a recliner chair that is then raised so that you are lying in a relaxed and comfortable position. You will be covered with a sheet and if requested a blanket. Your dignity is paramount.

How is your personal information used?

Confidentiality is very important. The information collected at the consultation and during the treatment is used purely for the creation of treatment plans and for future appointments. Your personal information is held securely and not stored on any electronic device. Your information will not be disclosed to any third parties except those set out under the GDPR guidelines.

Do you need to do anything in preparation for the therapist’s arrival?

Before my arrival, please ensure your treatment area is warm with good lighting and free of obstacles (e.g. coffee tables). Please ensure all distractions are removed. Mobile phones should be switched off as these will prevent you from having a relaxed and enjoyable experience. Constant use of these will result in the treatment being abandoned without refund. If you are expecting an important call, please discuss this with me prior to the treatment starting. It is important that you are fully hydrated and have used the toilet beforehand. You will also need a glass of water at the end of the session, please bring one with you to the treatment area.

What do responses feel like?

Responses are areas where imbalances have manifested, there are two kinds of responses. Texture responses are felt by the therapist and these include skin texture, crunchiness, popping, and tension among others. The second response will be felt by the client, a bruised feeling or a sharp sensation are most typical but tingling, hot or cool sensations and twitching are not uncommon. The sensations you feel will depend on the imbalance and where it has manifested. The overall experience should be relaxing and sensations felt should ease or even vanish with gentle manipulation and pressure.

What side effects may be experienced?

Not everyone will experience side effects but they are a common indication that the body has reacted well to the treatment. Side effects are caused by your body’s own natural reactions to the treatment and are a necessary consequence. The most common side effects experienced may include fatigue, tiredness, headaches, unusual or more frequent bowel or bladder movements, however there are others. Side effects should not be severe in nature or continue more than 48 hours after the treatment., and I will discuss ways to help you through the side effects after the treatment.

How long will a session last?

The overall session normally lasts at least 90 minutes to include set up and tidy away. A general foot reflexology treatment will last 60 minutes. This includes a brief lifestyle chat, foot read and foot massage. Please see the treatment menu for enhanced and hand reflexology sessions.

What products are used during a treatment session?

I will normally use a foot balm during the treatment. These are mostly vegan and come in various scents. Moisturiser will be offered during the final foot massage. Please let the me know if you do not want products to be used. Please note clients who have allergies where emergency medical treatment would normally be required will not be offered products. However, you are welcome to provide a safe product to be used instead.
