Frequently asked questions

Can reflexology be used to cure existing health conditions or to diagnose a new health condition?

No, reflexology cannot cure you of any condition you already have or diagnose any new condition. It is designed to be a complementary therapy to work alongside modern medicine. It is a safe holistic treatment that can promote a sense of wellbeing and relaxation which is beneficial in achieving better health.

Can reflexology be used on clients living with all health conditions?

Reflexology is a safe complementary treatment that can be enjoyed by most clients and is suitable for all ages. There may be limitations and variations to a treatment depending on individual requirements and expectations. I will discuss these during the initial phone consultation.

Do I need to see a health practitioner about my existing health condition before a treatment?

It is not necessary to see your GP or medical healthcare practitioner before having a reflexology treatment if you consider yourself to be in good health and any current condition/s you have are stable. However, if you have a condition that is not stable, if you are trialling medication or if you have an undiagnosed issue that requires investigation then you may be advised to contact your own medical professional for more advice before having a treatment.

All clients are expected to sign a disclaimer prior to all treatments.

Can everyone have reflexology?

I can support most people, male, female and of all ages. However, the treatment may be altered to accommodate a client’s individual needs. I will discuss any cautions or alterations that need to be taken at the time of the phone consultation.

If during the phone consultation I feel that the treatment would not benefit the client or is likely to cause severe healing reactions due to conditions they already have a treatment will not be offered.

Clients suffering from any infectious illness, foot infections, diarrhoea or vomiting should contact me prior to any treatment. I will not treat a client who is under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Can frail clients or children be treated?

Yes, the treatment is suitable for all ages. However, in some cases hand reflexology may be more comfortable and relaxing.

I do not actively advertise my services to children and any person under the age of 16 would need to have parental consent and be chaperoned by a responsible adult at all times during the treatment.

Why is an initial phone consultation required prior to treatment?

An initial phone consultation provides an excellent opportunity for me to introduce myself prior to the treatment. It is useful for me to gain knowledge about your current lifestyle, health and expectations for the overall therapy.

From this I can create a personalised treatment plan that can provide you with the best possible experience. It is also an opportunity for you to ask me questions and to learn more about reflexology and what it can do to support you.

Is clothing removed during the treatment?

Only footwear including socks are removed to allow treatment, it is preferable to wear loose fitting garments to allow access to the ankles and feet.

You will be asked to sit on a recliner chair that is then raised so that you are lying in a relaxed and comfortable position. You will be covered with a sheet and if requested a blanket. Your dignity is paramount.

How is my personal information used?

Your confidentiality is very important to me. The information collected at the consultation and during the treatment is used purely for the creation of treatment plans, future appointments, finance records and future promotions.

The personal information you give me is held securely and is not disclosed to any third parties except those set out under the GDPR guidelines. Please read my privacy agreement for all details on your rights and how I use and handle your personal information.

Do I need to do anything in preparation for the therapist’s arrival?

Before my arrival, please ensure your treatment area is warm with good lighting and free of obstacles (e.g. coffee tables). Please ensure all distractions are removed.

Mobile phones should be switched off as these will prevent you from having a relaxed and enjoyable experience. Constant use of these will result in the treatment being abandoned without refund. If you are expecting an important call, please discuss this with me prior to the treatment starting.

It is important that you are fully hydrated and have used the toilet beforehand. You will also need a glass of water at the end of the session, please bring one with you to the treatment area.

What do responses feel like?

Responses are areas where imbalances have manifested, there are two kinds of responses.

Texture responses are felt by the therapist and these include skin texture, crunchiness, popping, and tension among others. The second response will be felt by the client, a bruised feeling or a sharp sensation are most typical but tingling, hot or cool sensations and twitching are not uncommon.

The sensations you feel will depend on the imbalance and where it has manifested. The overall experience should be relaxing and sensations felt should ease or even vanish with gentle manipulation and pressure.

What are healing reactions?

A healing reaction is how your body responds to the treatment once it has concluded. Not everyone will experience them but they are a common indication that the body has reacted to the treatment and considered a necessary consequence.

The most common reactions experienced may include fatigue, tiredness, headaches, unusual or more frequent bowel or bladder movements and flu like symptoms. They should not be severe in nature or continue more than 72 hours after the treatment.

I will discuss ways to help you can limit the effects of healing reactions after your treatment.

How long will a session last?

The overall session normally lasts at least 90 minutes to include set up and tidy away. A general foot reflexology treatment will last 60 minutes. This includes a brief lifestyle chat, foot assessment and foot massage.

Please see the treatment menu for other treatments.

What products are used during a treatment session?

I will normally use a foot balm during the treatment. These are mostly vegan and come in various scents. Moisturiser will be offered during the final foot massage.

Please let me know if you do not want products to be used. Please note clients who have allergies where emergency medical treatment would normally be required will not be offered products. However, you are welcome to provide a safe product to be used instead.

Are there any additional costs?

All prices shown on the treatment menu are in full. No additional costs are added unless the client requests additional treatments.

How often should you have treatments?

The number and frequency of treatments depend very much on an individual’s needs and expectations.

Those seeking relaxation will benefit from having one treatment every 1 to 2 months.

Regular maintenance can be achieved by having a treatment every 1 to 3 months.

Client’s with more complex requirements will need to allow more time for noticeable benefits to show. A series of sessions at frequent intervals for example 1 treatment every week for at least a month may be required to reach a required expectation. (please enquire about my multiple bookings discount)

In all cases regular reviews will help ensure that you are receiving the correct number of treatments/ frequencies required to support you as an individual.
